BEST MUSIC OF 2009

The coming of a new year means best of last year's music. Since I woke up super early for a shift that I forgot that I wasn't working, I have some time to make a music post.

I get almost all of my music from these two sources: Hype Machine and Kevin Na. They basically dictate what I listen to. Hype Machine posts the music from a bunch of different music blogs. Kevin just has a lot of music. I don't listen to the radio, nor do I have cable, so I don't really know dem kids are listening to these days. I mean I wanna know. When we had cable, VH1's Nocturnal State was a staple program. It was the only time that actual music videos were played in their entirety on television. But now every time I'm in a car and "that" song comes on, prompting everyone to sing along, I just sit quietly and awkwardly bob my head.

So hmm, how do I start this. Five Best Albums of 2009? Ok, in no particular order. Below the album is my favorite song from it.

The xx - xxVCR

Phoenix - Wolfgang Amadeus PhoenixGirlfriend

Japandroids - Post-NothingCrazy/Forever

Yeah Yeah Yeahs - It's BlitzHysteric

The Pains of Being Pure at Heart - The Pains of Being Pure at HeartYoung Adult Friction

Hookay, I guess now songs that came out in 2009 that seriously fuck my shit up. I went nuts for these songs.

M83 - We Own The Sky (Udachi Remix)
  • This song is grand. Even though I've listened to this song over a hundred times, I always get blown away at 1:05. I will literally be standing on the bus and get rocked back and forth by the massive synth. So intense.
Bombay Bicycle Club - Always Like This
  • This song reminds me of mornings in the spring semester. I'd wake up, find this song on Hype, and do my morning stretches. I think it's the drums that get to me the most. So simple. So catchy.
Will Stratton - Your California Sky
  • Like many girls, this song cast a spell over me and I could not stop listening to this for a long time. It's just two verses but I just can't help but to get lost in all the nuuuuhhh nuh nuh nuh nah nuuuuuhhh's.
Metric - Help I'm Alive
  • I don't really know why I like this song so much. But I do. I think it's the chorus that gets me thinking that it's not that good, with the standard rock beat and stuff. But then the verse comes in with the jelly synth and echo-ee drums which makes the chorus ok for me.
Discovery - Can You Discover?
  • Ah, Discovery. The power pop electro auto tune arpeggiate everything duo consisting of a dude from Vampire Weekend and a dude from Ra Ra Riot. "Oh baby baby babee baabe" Almost sounds like Sam Cooke. Which is why Hank and I could not stop singing that one line over and over again.
The Antlers - Two
  • If you listen to the lyrics, it's almost as if this guy is speaking from a first hand account. But he's not. Feels like it though. The album tells the fictional story of a hospital worker who falls in love with a bone cancer patient, their relationship ending in her death.
